Dead Bird Reporting

Found a Dead Bird? Please Read This.

If you’ve discovered a deceased bird, it may be valuable for monitoring the spread of West Nile Virus (WNV). Certain species act as early warning signs for the virus because of their high sensitivity and their role in transmitting the virus back to mosquito populations.

Please follow these guidelines to ensure your safety and help us collect viable data.

⚠️ Safety First: Do Not Handle

Do not pick up or touch the bird with your bare hands. Even if the bird appears "clean," wild animals can carry parasites or diseases. Keep children and pets away from the area.

Is the Bird Eligible for Pickup?

We are only able to collect specific species that are in "fresh" condition. Please check the lists below before reporting.

1. Accepted Species

We only collect the following birds due to their sensitivity to WNV:

  • Crows & Ravens
  • Jays (such as Blue Jays or Steller's Jays)
  • Robins
  • Red-Tailed Hawks

2. Physical Condition

The specimen must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Freshness: Must be deceased for less than 24 hours.
  • No Pests: Must be free of insects (such as maggots).
  • No Trauma: Must have no obvious physical damage (e.g., hit by a car, window strike, or shot).
